Match Report

Burton Albion Ladies came from behind to secure three points, in a 4-1 win over Solihull Moors, that moved them into second.

Goals from Hayleigh Sutton, Charlotte Cresswell and a brace from Jordan Atkin sunk Solihull Moors.

Sam White scored early on for the visitors as both teams struggled with the hot conditions.

Sutton equalised the score lines after Sophia Bonser finds her with a cross from the right. It had come just moments after the Brewers’ first chance of the game after they had failed to get into the match in the opening 15 minutes.

They could have given themselves the lead when the referee pointed to the spot as goal scorer Sutton danced her way into the box. The defender brought her down just as she was about to unleash the shot.

Atkin stepped up, but the league’s top goal scorer was denied by a great save by the ‘keeper to keep the scores level.

The breakthrough, though, came in the second half. Atkin made up for her earlier miss when the striker scores with her head for the second consecutive game. Bonser beat a player, getting the ball into the box before Atkin nodded it into the back of the net.

She added her second when she was handed the ball by the opposition. Atkin drove past two defenders before rounding the ‘keeper and slotted it into the net to give the Brewers a two-goal cushion.

In the final minute, substitute Cresswell made her impact from the bench. Captain Charlotte Worth found her down the wing and she fired it in from the tightest of angles.

The result means that Burton move up to second as they go into the final day of their debut season in the FA WPL.

Manager Jack White said: “We're all very happy with the victory and delighted to move up to 2nd place in the league. It's been a tremendous effort to get to this position but there's still work to be done. The second one game finishes, the preparation for the next one begins.

“Solihull Moors punished us for our slow start but all our players showed great character and determination to get back into the match so quickly. I felt that we were the dominant side from then on and deserved to win as comfortably as we did.

“All four goals were very well taken by confident players who are really on form.

“As always, we'll train hard in preparation for next week's game. The players are excited about the match and looking forward to show everyone what they can do.”
