Burton Albion Ladies finished their debut season in the FA Women’s Premier League in style with a 4-2 victory over Sporting Khalsa.

The result ensured that they finished the campaign in second after defying expectation and sailing to the top end of the table, only behind Loughborough Foxes.

Goals from Hayleigh Sutton, Hannah Baines and a brace from Jordan Atkin clinched the spot.

However, Khalsa came here to spoil the party, opening the scoring in the eighth minute completely against the run of play. Although the Brewers hadn’t carved out any chances, they had seen the majority of the ball and were hit on the counter.

However, seconds later honours were even once again when Sutton made her trademark run down the left. She was picked out by Sophia Bonser before slotting it home.

Khalsa went back in front as they caught the Brewers after a defensive mistake.

Atkin and Sutton had chances to get the Brewers back into the game but it was the league’s top goal scorer who added to her personal tally. She showed her class with a goal with the outside of her boot.

After the break, the Brewers piled on the pressure. With second place up for grabs, they needed a win to secure the position. Bonser had two opportunities to give them the lead, while Sutton blazed over her shot with the best chance of the game.

But they finally found the goal to give them the lead. Atkin knocked the ball through to Baines, the centre-back, to poke it home sparking joyous celebrations on the field and in the dugout.

Two minutes later, they doubled their advantage through Atkin’s second of the afternoon. Bonser played the ball through to the striker who had to defenders racing after her. Yet in typical Atkin style, she breezed past both before smashing it past the on rushing ‘keeper.

The win confirmed the Brewers second place finish in the FA WPL.
